How to Install Decorative Box for Downlights

In the following article we provide you with more information about how to install a decorative box for downlights on your own.

Products and tools you need:

Standard Plasterboard Type A
Premium Profile CD
Premium Profile UD
Drywall Screw TN 3.5x25
Drywall Screw TEX TN 4.2x13
Nail plug 6x40 or Plasterboard Screw TN 5.5x38
Tape Measure
Level
Tin Snips
Drywall Screwdriver
Hole saw 67 mm
Drywall Grinder

The electrical circuit providing electricity for the downlights needs to be provided already before you start installing the box.

The first step is to use a pencil, tape measure and a level to mark the exact position of the box on the ceiling and wall.

The standard overall dimensions of the box are 20 cm x 20 cm as you determine the length according to your wish and the specific features of your space.

Then we proceed to the sizing of the first Premium profile UD, which will be part of the main structure of the box. Premium profile UD is mounted to the main ceiling using Ceiling anchor 6x40 mm in case the base is solid. In case you have a plasterboard base we mount the UD profile with a Plasterboard screw TN 5.5x38. For both types of fasteners, the fastening distance should be 500 mm.

After the UD profile is put up, the front strip of plasterboard (with a width of 20 cm) is mounted to the ceiling. Use a Drywall screw TN 3.5 x 25 mm to fix it. Then proceed to the installation of the second Premium profile UD. It should be fixed to the enclosing wall by using Nail plug 6x40 in case the wall is solid and Plasterboard Screw TN 5.5x38 in the case of a plasterboard base.

The third Premium profile UD is fixed to the first already installed strip of gypsum board.

To stabilize the already built construction of UD profiles, additional Premium CD profiles are installed at every 50 cm by fastening Drywall Screw TEX TN 4.2x13 at both ends. Remember to prevent the position of the CD profiles from overlapping with the desired location of the downlights.

Next is the installation of the lower part of the box by putting up the second strip of gypsum board with a width of 20 cm. The fastening is done by Drywall screws TN 3.5x25 at every 25 cm.

In order to form a straight and beautiful edge of the box, it is necessary to sand the edges of the board with a Drywall Grinder.

The final step is to drill the holes for the downlights using Hole saw with a diameter corresponding to the diameter of the lights.
